Aftaab Theatre was established by Ariane Mnouchkine the director and founder of Theatre du Soleil of Paris, France. Theatre du Soleil made a workshop for Afghan artists in Kabul Afghanistan during the summer of 2005 and at the end of the workshop she chose 20 actors and asked them to be together as a group.

They named the group Aftaab which means soleil in French and “sun” in English, the group had 20 members and now they are 19. Since then Aftaab (located in French Cultural Centre, Kabul – Afghanistan) has performed 3 theatrical plays, Romeo and Juliet (directed by Maurice Durozier), Le Tartuffe (directed by Helene Cinque) and The Caucasian Chalk Circle (directed by Arash Absalan, a professor in the Tehran Arts University located in Iran).
